A Box Full Of Our Favorites

The weather in Hillsboro has been very dry these last few weeks. So Cedarmore Farm has had to use their irrigation system so the crops are still looking good. But they are hoping for a nice rain to help level things out. Hopefully the rains will come soon.

This week we have some green tomatoes in our boxes. Andy wonders how many of us actually cook with green tomatoes? He knows that I like a good fried green tomato. Lizzie rolls them in flour and then fries them just like you would yellow squash or zucchini.

The Swiss chard is really producing. Andy remembers this being the third week in a row that it has been included in our boxes. Search in recipes to find recipes for Swiss chard. Lizzie makes a stir fry with some of the Swiss chard and Andy really likes it. Search Recipe Share for dishes from CSA members.

Report from the farm is that we will be seeing more green beans and peas in our boxes soon. Yum!

And just a special little something extra for Mark from Eli Zook. The back story is Mark, my husband, has never met a stranger. He will talk to anyone. And he loves to tease kids. So Eli was the one who got most of the teasing during Farm Day last Saturday...see blog below. After all day of Mark's teasing, Eli said that Mark just better watch it because he was going to pack our box on Tuesday. And did he ever. A little thistle was packed in especially for Mark with a little note from Eli. Priceless!

We got peas in our box this week instead of the green beans. I cannot tell you how exciting that is for me! I've planned two special meals for them. We loved visiting the farm last week too!

In The Beginning

Andy and Lizzie have known each other since they were very small. Growing up in an Amish community there are plenty of opportunities to play and work together. They grew up in the same church but went to different schools. Several years ago they moved from Wayne County, OH to right outside Hillsboro, OH and established Cedarmore Farm. The farm got it's name very simply...in Wayne County there were very few cedar or sycamore trees . When Andy and Lizzie got here, they noticed an abundance of cedar and sycamore trees on the land. So they just merged the two names and Cedarmore Farm was born. They have worked very hard in the few years that they have been farming the land. Andy and Lizzie are in the process of building their house and hopefully they will be able to move into the upstairs this spring. We can only see good things in their future farming experiences. And we wish them well.

Not only is Cedarmore growing fruits and vegetables. The Andy's have a growing family. They have four of the most precious children! Anna, who is excited about going to school this fall. Dennis who follows Andy around like his shadow. Moses who is doing well after a little run-in with the pigs. And Lovina who is the youngest at 9 months.

Then there is a new season on the farm. In the winter (Jan 2015), the Andy's packed up and moved to MO leaving the CSA in the most capable hands of John and Anna (Anna is Andy's twin sister) Zook and there 7 children. They changed the name of their farm to Cedarmore Farm so we English wouldn't be too confused. So the work has begun to provide lush healthy vegetables for the CSA season 2015 which begins in May.
